I am feeling frustrated these days; because at age 74 I seem to run out of steam very easily. Sadly, i had an accident last year where I broke my patella (kneecap) and it was a devastating injury both physical and mental. The accident also spawned other issues like blood clots, a lung infection and high blood sugar.
While I have overcome some of this, I am still dealing with problems with the knee, and also my feet and problems I had previously with my deteriorating spine. My knee is stiff, and I lack full range of motion. I seem to have sustained some nerve damage in my feet, they constantly bother me. Before the accident even with some of the problems I had I still had energy to go for long walks, bike rides and dance classes. These days it seems it takes everything I have just to do a minor amount of exertion; i.e., a short walk, work in the garden or things of that nature.
I feel frustrated, and not sure if I am expecting too much. As a type 2 diabetic, I watch my diet, keep my weight in check and don't have bad habits other than a glass or two of wine in the evening. I am definitely grateful that I recovered from the serious issues I had in the hospital, but long for some of my old life back. I am tireid of being tired, but at this point not sure what (if anything) I can do. Can anyone else relate? Have any advice or suggestions?
Regaining strength and stamina can be difficult after an injury.
Rule out the simplest possibilities first. How is your vitamin level? B vitamins in particular. B12 is necessary for energy and stamina. B1, B3, B6 and B12 are neurotropic vitamins that help heal nerve damage and relieve those symptoms. You might become more active with no/less nerve pain.
I don't know if you take Metformin but it's known to cause B12 deficiency in many people. Even if you aren't taking that, I would try a B complex anyway. Many people your age need it.
Other than that, I would make sure to have a nutrient-rich diet and avoid processed foods. See what happens. I would avoid alcohol but I know many people don't want to give it up.

Thanks!
1. You're 74. You can't do things as much, or in the same way, as you did when you were 44.
2. If you're tired all the time you need to get your heart checked. Preferably ASAP. See if you can get a referral to a cardiologist. If not, then tell your PCP you are concerned about your energy level beyond the expected "getting old" type of issue. Artery blockage can cause lethargy. If not addressed, it can lead to heart attacks or stroke.
might take a look at carnitine for the lack of strength/energy. also might consider whey protein - a good general building material
