I saw an amazing endocrinoligst today. I got more from meeting with her for 20 min than I did in 3 months w/the previous one. She diagnosed me with hyperthyroidism and scheduled a radioactive iodine uptake/ablation procedure.

She explained how almost all of my problems could be explained by this: rapid rise in heart rate on exertion, constantly mildly sick, low tolerance for heat, depression, unable to lose weight, and constant fatigue.

I've had problems for 40 years but not to the extent that I have had for the past year. Can't believe it took so long but very thankful for her!

That's great. What tests did she perform in order for her to come to this diagnosis? 40 years is a long time without answers.

She actually didn't do any tests, I brought copies of the previous work-up. I had every blood test on the thyroid I thought existed, an ultrasound, and a biopsy of the nodules. She did feel my thyroid and looked over all my history and symptoms. It has not always been this bad, it has gotten worse over the last 18 months.

I have never been able to lose weight and many doctors I saw for other things would ask if I had thyroid problems. Maybe my neck area looked wrong? I've also been depressed for many years but I guess that was seen as a MH issue not a result of thyroid functioning. I'm not sure I mentioned until today that I had a low tolerance for heat. Their waiting room was really hot and I got my usual red face just sitting there. I get overheated quickly and then it takes me 1-2 hours to cool down if i just sit in a/c.

It is always a great feeling to finally know what is going on! My ten year old daughter has Hashimotos (hypothyroid - autoimmune) and it has been a crazy ride. It was so nice to finally feel like we were getting a hold on it.

Even though she is hypothyroid, she had a period where she had very high levels of T3 and she was having the same heat tolerance issues that you speak of. I think we are starting to get things under control and she is doing well.

I hope your treatment goes well!

Was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 4 years ago. Did the uptake test and all that. I unerstand the plight. Kinda disappointing that it took a year of doctoring to figure it out...

I had to have a biopsy of my thyroid too. Yee haw. The diagnosis came about the same time as my cancer diagnosis but two were unrelated.

Thats good news! But I thought that hyperthyroidism caused weight loss? I have the same symptoms as you, especially heat intolorance, and also have heart rythm irregularities and frequent infections. My Dr disregarded hyperthryodism partially because of the wieght thing. But I also just went through menopause so many of my symptoms, including weight gain, were attributed to that even though they were around long before menopause started and still haven't gone away.

According to my doctor, who is "The" thyroid specialist around here, over-active thyroid can interfere with my diabetes and cause weight gain. At least, that's what I understood her to say. There isn't hardly any body system that the thyroid doesn't affect, including all kinds of hormones.

Wow! Congratulations, from someone who has had chronic health issues for 20 years without a diagnosis. I hope your doctor is correct.

You have proven that it can turn out to be a blessing when symptoms worsen to the point where a doctor can finally connect the dots!

Docs who are good detectives in assessing all of a patient's health clues are golden! I'm glad that she recognized what the problem was. The good thing is that hypothyroidism is highly treatable and easy to regulate. Congratulations~
