Naahhh... It's just another official science theory. No one knows what UV distribution across the globe was 1.5 million years ago to start with. It is not a proven fact that humans came from Africa.
But she "got on TV".

We have: Different colors for hair. Different colors for eyes. Different colors for skin.

but we pick skin color to be the big deal?

Historically skin color has been more relevant to many people than hair and eye color. Issues related to skin color have shaped life in the U.S and many other countries.

Personally, I think redheads are just fine, but I wouldn't want one to move into my neighborhood.
