Point #1:
Brazil had millions of more slave than America
Point #2:
Brazil still ended slavery in 1888 without any civil war
Again, to say America would’ve continued slavery to this day, beyond Brazil is hilarious. Slavery was a dying inefficient non-sustainable means of production which explains why the South lost so badly in the Civil War.
Truth is, the folks in the south pretty much died for a system that was dying anyway. This is why many people say the South fought for states rights, not for slavery.
The Civil War being about slavery... No women allows her husband or sons to go off to war to free the oppressed. It's all economics at the state level, and it's duty to king (he the subject, eminent domain) or country (he the citizen, as defined by Napoleon).
They got essentially the same deal as before but freedom allowed them to decide who they would be getting the same treatment from. Maya Angelou told the sad tale of how a black man would sit on the porch while his white "boss" had his way with his wife inside his house. This was part of being free ? We're not talking about today we are talking about how much freedom did a black person really have in 1865?

Being free didn't mean the same thing to a black person as it did a white person in 1865. There was still a system in place to usurp black people of rights, status, and anything of value. A good example of this was Blind Tom who died in 1905. He was the highest paid piano player in the 19th century. He nor his mother or siblings ever got a penny of his earnings, estimated at over 2 million a year by today’s standards.
How did this happen? His owner’s family was allowed to continue owning him after slavery was abolished. This was all choreographed through the courts and an arrangement with the freedman’s bureau of all agencies. It would not be wrong to assume that slaves always came in to contact with free blacks from time to time and were able to make comparisons in regard to who was freer.

You can't make terrible things go away by not believing them. There is a term called "the chickens come home to roost." I had a conversation with a white woman old enough to remember being 25 in the depression and she said young white women who had good jobs in offices sometimes had to let their bosses have their way with them and their unemployed husbands knew that was part of the deal.
During the American revolution many slaves ran away to the British/loyalist side and those that were not killed or captured by the colonists were repatriated by the Crown to England, Canada and other Crown colonies. In the Civil War, it was possible in some circumstances for slaves to escape, join Union Forces and be freed.

Military emancipation, and that's exactly what happened. General David Hunter freed slaves months before the emancipation proclamation was issued, though Lincoln made him rescind the order. Self-emancipated slaves forced the military to act.
Some slave owners allowed a slave to purchase himself from them. In Leon Witlack's award winning book, "been in the Storm too long," (1979) there were letters slaves wrote to one another. (yes, many slaves could read and write) Many of the letters began with the sentence, "can you buy me?"
One well known story tells of a slave who purchased himself and subsequently amassed $20,000 to purchase the rest of his family.
