Well of the forefathers (I assume you mean the revolutionaries) I don't think any single one was the most patriotic but it's fair to say Benedict Arnold was one of the least.

Judging from their attitudes toward the new constitution of 1787, I would say Patrick Henry and Samuel Adams. Both, however, eventually accomodated themselves to the idea of a strong controlling central government - though for different reasons. Henry, as I recall, remained dubious the longer.

I didn't realise patriotism could be the subject of a competition. What prizes do you get if you win?

The OP's question appeared to me to be about attitudes toward size of government and its power, not patriotism.

How is it about patriotism?

well i guess they meant in the title...however with my political beliefs patriotism and individual responsibility, smaller govt...etc... go hand in hand...but i didnt want to start a political debate...i just wanted to see what everyones opinions were on who they thought out of the american forefathers wanted the least amt. of govt. involved in the citizens life...being that in my humble opinion, they fought against a tyranny govt.

I don't think the Brits were very tyrannical at all, I think they were pretty reasonable.

An argument could be made for Thomas Paine, who seemed to the most steadfast in his opposition to the status quo. Without his influence, America might have been more a copy of the rigid governmentalism that was de rigeur at the time. The founders might have followed more of a path of least resistance, had Paine not been in there rocking their boats.
