None of you remember Attorney General Alexander Palmer and the first Red Scare in the US?

The Palmer Raids?

Senator McKellar's proposal to ship all US radicals to a penal colony on Guam?

The prosecution of Eugene Debs?

The restrictive Immigration Act of 1924 designed to keep the Reds out by discriminating against Eastern Europeans?

We had a dress rehearsal for the McCarthy era between 1917 and 1925. Red hysteria was manifest in all its forms. The US cooperated with its WW I western allies in attempting to aid the counter revolutionaries in ousting the Bolsheviks. The United States refused to recognize that the Soviets were the legitimate rulers of Russia until 1933.
