If striving for accuracy, in a 19th century context, its likely that most had little in the way of good maps. It was a constant problem for civil war armies who had to make their own often.
Good point. Perhaps it's more accurate to say that I am the one who needs a map. If I'm going to have this man travel, I want to make sure the route is plausible.
Well unless you want to pay for one of the maps I noted earlier, and they look expensive to me, you might try contacting the national archives. They have an amazing amount of materials. I think they will make copies of it which would still cost you money, but probably be cheaper than other alternatives.

I did notice some of those maps ran around $11,000 or so, lol. A LITTLE out of my price range.
A great deal of long-distance travel in the 18th century, even on horseback, was done on waterways, by boats, and I would expect that to have been largely true well into the 19th century, as well.
