I remember both my grandmother and an aunt having a hobby where they restored or embellished items they found or bought at yard sales or flea markets. I got into the flea market part of a while, but not my bag. I did like the restoring part though and took that on with pleasure, especially painting or repairing. I got some plastic fairies from a client a few years ago that had been sitting in the sun and all the color was faded. One was broke at the waist and I used a plastic repair kit to weld the sections back together. I use acrylic paints throughout the process and finish with an oil based varnish to seal it. I also got some plastic garden markers that had been sitting in a bucket of funky water, their colors were gone and the plastic was stained. I gave them a good cleaning and repainted them. I start with a white base paint the through stages. On the fairies I do the skin first, then the clothing, the plants, flowers and finish with the wings. It all gets at least 3 coats of paint with the wings getting as much as 6 to 8 coats. I am currently at the flower stage on the second fairy and by this weekend will have the face and wings completed.
These are the vegetable labels I painted a few years back and a butterfly label that I did a few weeks ago while my back was out for three days.
