[quote=World Citizen;5190303]You could always have someone build you a table with an box / indention for your new machine to sit down in. It wouldn't fold up like your moms but it could easily be made to give you a similar sewing surface.

Yes, you can buy an inexpensive table and cut out the indentation for the sewng machine. That wouldn't work for me, because I have several (lol) machines plus a serger and they are all different sizes. You might be able to do that with the Walmart one as well, since it looks like that one doesn't have the cut out for the machine.

This is a video of one of the top of the line versions of these kind of tables, with the lift:

One word of caution. I bought a cabinet that was made to take my model of machine. It did and was a very nice looking.

BUT....the space for the chair was not centered with the needle. Therefore, when I sat, the sewing line was not directly in front of me. It was very awkward. I found myself sitting lopsided because I was trying to see straight from an off-centered position.

So make sure that the chair space is big enough for you to shift over a few inches if you need to.

Padgett that has been a problem with many of the makers of cabinets that are not sewing only suppliers. It looks great until you need to sit and sew and find yourself scrunched up against one side of the cabinet. Even the purpose built ones do not have the needle centered, usually it is still machine centered but the space to the left is larger.

The most commonly advertised cabinets come from Horn and Koala, but there are actually quite few manufacturers out there. I've gotten used to sewing on counters, desks and secretarial extensions because I have several different machines (sewing, sewing and embroidery and serger) and have taken classes or given them in a variety of places. After a while you don't "need" one set up in a special cabinet. The expense alone is enough for me to think I don't need it. I'd rather spend my $$ on fabric and thread. I would hesitate to get the one from Walmart (sorry world citizen) simply because it not only does not have the cut out but it looks like the machine would end up as high or higher than on a plain desk.

Not sure what would be construed as advertising here... but will include a few links to help you see what is out there. If these get cut then just use Goggle to look up "sewing machine cabinets" and most should show up.

Sewing Room Furniture

Sewing Machine Cabinet from Overstock.com

Arrow Auntie Em Sewing Cabinet - Model 98901 at Sears.com

Koala Cabinets and Furniture offered by Sewing Machine Outlet

Horn of America Collection - Sewing Cabinets and Furniture by Horn of America

I've heard mostly good things about allbrands (the first link) for both sewing machines and sewing supplies so if you need to order something they are a possibility. They have the single biggest selection of furniture for sewing in one place.

I highly recommend you try and find a local dealer for either Horn or Koala so you can actually see the cabinet. Many sewing machine shops will have samples of at least one manufacturer.
