I would add, that depending upon what you are attempting to hang, another set of hands is often helpful, even to support the fixture until you get the wires attached.
thanks I saw the guy change/hang the one in the other room it didn't look to hard. I will get an extra set of hands, turn off the lights and give it a go. thanks
Turn off the circuit breaker, especially if you have no idea who wired your home and how far from current code it may have done. More than a few "do it yourself" electrical projects have resulted in things like switched neutrals and cross-jumpered hots -- either of which could kill an unsuspecting renovator...
Working over your head is stressful and can be tiring / disorientating to even experienced remodelers. -- give yourself plenty of time, setup worklights (on extensions from a circuit that is not switched off.
You could probably hire an electrician for around $100 in most parts of the country, an experienced pro will likely have the whole thing done in less than an hour. For a first timer I would budget half a day, longer if you need to the go to the hardware store for a few tool and supply purchases...
As long as its not to involved its pretty straight forward. basically just matching colors from the new fixture to the wires coming to the fixture. Something you may want to do however is go to Lowes or HD and buy a Pen circuit tester, all you do is hold it up against each line and it will verify current. Even after you flip the breaker off this will verify that there is no live current coming to through the lines. My house's breakers are set up really weird and when I flipped the breaker for the main room not all the outlets and fixtures went off. Luckily I checked with the pen tester first and noticed it or it would of been ugly.
