We are, at this moment, hanging a chandelier. Would you put it 30" from the table top from the lowest dangly thing on the fixture, or 30" from the lower arms of the chandelier?
I am thinking it should be as low as possible as long as it doesn't block seated diners? It is at 30" inches from the hanging crystal ball in the center of the fixture, but I feel it needs to be lower.

Higher. Lowest dangly thing. You don't want anything hanging too low. Measure from the absolute bottom of it.

We have a hanging crystal ball dangling in the center of ours too and I also thought it would look better a little lower. I wound up hanging it at 28" and it looks perfect to me. You wouldn't think 2 little inches makes much of a difference, but it did.

I doubt anyone will come over with a tape measure to critique it, so do what you think looks best.

What did you end up doing?

Keep in mind that even 30" can block the vision of tall people. I'm not saying you should hang it higher than 30". Just saying any lower would probably make tall guests uncomfortable during dinner conversation. I've been to restaurants where I have to bend down to see people on the other side of the table because the pendant lights are hanging too low.

Heck, I just went and measured my height while sitting. I'm 5'7" and when I'm sitting I am 36" tall. I measured between the chair seat and my dining room table and that's 12". So I have 24" height above the table. That means my son, who is 6'3" sits approximately 32" above the table. But he's long waisted so it's probably sits more like 36" above the table. He would be staring right into a chandelier that was hung lower.

The lowest dangly thing is at 23" above the table, and the bulk of the chandelier is at 29" above the table. There is no conflict with the diners seeing each other. Hopes, we are tall people. My poor long suffering installer (DH) just kept adding a link to the chain until I felt the drop was right.
Thanks for everyone's input.
It just goes to show you that eyeballing it is really better than "the rules".

My family is tall in the torsos (very long waisted), not the legs.

Glad you're happy! Kudos to hubby for being patient! Here's to eyeballing!

Lowest dangly thing, which means higher. In fact, as a person well over 6' tall, I'd want to have it even higher than that - but that's just me.
