At the Home depot near me they have removed all of the kitchen vignettes. Now all the have are selection centers where they have door styles and color samples. They have the same setup for counter top selection as well. The cabinet selection center has been shrunk down to a small area.

What do you think of this new model for them?

Is this happening in other parts of the country?

I was just in Home Depot yesterday. They still have kitchen displays.

I've noticed the appliance section is getting bigger than the cabinet section though.

That's the opposite of the way it used to be when there were just a few appliances.

I'll be they realized they were making more money selling appliances than cabinets.

If they eliminate displays completely, I suspect it won't last long because I think they'll see a drop in sales.

People like to see things. Many people can't visualize what something will look like.

What are they doing with the empty space? The kitchen cabinet showroom that we purchased from only had 3 mock kitchen setups, which wasn't a big deal for us.

They're putting more appliances on the floor to compete with Lowes.
And since they can't hire and keep certified designers- no reason to keep a lot of kitchen vignettes for display.
If you have no one to sell them- why have them?

Did you ask the big orange man why? You got me curious. Somehow I doubt the management would tell their own employees anyway from what I hear.

I suspect kitchen sales suck pretty bad to warrant dedicating that much square floor area to. Sales sucks for every other store across the country but for a few isolated pockets. Good assumption on others guesses above about expanding the appliance dept. My trade journals continue to show all North American sales for cabinets are flat but appliances are actually up. Breaking it down, ovens and cooktops are not the hot sellers but washers/dryers, dishwashers and microwave ovens are leading the sales figures. Hmmmm.

I googled "why is home depot shrinking the kitchen department" and I got over a thousand hits on Home Depot complaints. I kid you not.

I know just the person to ask. Gimmy till tomorrow and I will report right from the Horses mouth.

Got the answer already. I can't say everything but yes indeed MCS you were right. Every Home Depot store in North America (Canada and USA) are shrinking the kitchen dept and laying off 1 Cabinet Salesperson per store to start. More layoffs to come.

Appliance sales are doing well (despite the consumer able to get better prices at Best Buy) so the appliance dept will take up more floor space.

Since I frequent Lowes more often, and I also notice Lowes is hiring all over the country for Cabinet Sales or Special Sales is their proper title there, I wonder what's going on? This should be interesting to anyone that cares............................................. ....................

This reminds me of when Sears got out of the flooring business.

Makes sense. With Best Buy and Sears in danger of bankruptcy, that market looks more favorable to HD.

I've only bought 1 kitchen in my life, but I don't think the setups are the most important thing. The custom kitchen store where I shopped only had 3 kitchen mockups. To me, the key is a knoledgable staff, lots of samples, and a good 3D drawing of my kitchen.
