I have seen them in houses and do not like them. I especially despise the cut-out/niche above it designed for a television. Don't most people have flat screen TVs these days?
We have a fireplace in our back parlor and it's situated in the center of the wall. It is the focal point of the room and really handsome.
I personally don't care for "movable art" so I would never put a tv above a fireplace. In fact, I have two rules in our home, no TV in the bedroom or the great room or living room, which ever you prefer to call it. TV's have been relegated to the den or man cave and the kitchen.
I think the corner fireplace answered a lot of peoples prayers who didn't have a wall they could dedicate to a regular fireplace but it also creates a lot of angst.

Our 1932 house does not have a den or big kitchen, so the main TV is in the living room, and the second TV is in the addition which is the master bedroom. It's great for when you're sick and home in bed to watch TV without getting up and going downstairs. Or if the spouse wants to watch one thing in the living room and you want to watch something else or use the Wii fitness program. Or just cuddled up in bed watching a scary movie. This is our TV in the bedroom:
We have 2. The main drawback is they take up about 40 sq ft of floor space, but between the end and window there's enough room for a 70" TV, so that's not been an issue. I actually find they break up the room slightly less than the same size in the middle of a wall, but it limits seating options. FWIW, this one was built in the 1950's - so it's not just a recent phenomenon.
I don't like corner fireplaces but I equally don't like when they put it on the middle of the outside wall with two teeney 20" wide windows on either side.
I prefer them against a flat wall, but I don't utterly hate them in a corner. They just feel like a waste of space in a corner, though, and as the OP mentioned, it makes furniture placement more challenging if you also have a tv in the room.
Here's an example. This is very common in new construction around here and I can't stand it.
Then don't buy new construction in your area. What's the big deal?

No, they won't be. In the two homes with fireplaces that I have occupied both fireplaces were totally utilitarian and not an architectural focal point. I suppose it depends on where you live.
The window is almost floor to ceiling. The average window sill is what, 30" from the floor? That is tall enough to place a table, desk, low dresser, etc. against the wall underneath the window without obstructing the window.

When it comes to fireplaces and TVs the two things I do not understand is why most people place the TV above the fireplace, and; why people assume a TV must go against a wall.
