I was doing a little bit of painting in my newly installed self-designed custom closet, to go over where they had spackled from the holes from the builder installed shelves. And paint brush in hand, I wandered around the house getting all the little nicks and scrapes I saw from the moving in process. It was fun and it also made a nice different in how finished everything looks.

For whatever reason, even though in my old house, I had the entire thing painted before moving in, I never ever did any touch up work until I was getting ready to sell it. Fortunately, the paint I had kept ended up matching just about perfectly, even after 7 years and it looked great. I don't really know why I let it go, other than I had a toddler to start with and it seems like the dents and dings just came with the territory.

So now I'm thinking maybe do this as a quarterly thing? Or twice a year? Do others routinely break out the paint brush and take care of this on a regular basis?

Every spring I do the touch up in the house. If I don't do it, the wife will and that's not a good thing to let that woman loose with a paint brush and a can of paint. I also touch up any outside caulk or paint. I point up the mortar about every 5 years. All door hinges get a shot of spray silicone and any lock that doesn't work slick as glass gets taken apart and fixed. All windows are checked for properly working locks and sash balances. Sounds like a lot but it doesn't really take that much time. Another oddity for me, I change all of the circuit breakers every 5 years. Just an old habit that I'm not going to break.

I'd say my husband does it fairly often, every other month or so. We keep paint decanted in a small screw top container and cheap/disposable brushes/rollers on hand.

Good to hear that it is not too weird to do this more frequently than the never I did it before! lol! I guess I don't need to set some arbitrary timeframe, just that when I see enough places that need a touch up that it feels worth it to break out the paint brush, then it's time. I actually did a few more spots this morning, as it turned out the spackled areas in the closet needed a second coat. So I'm probably good for a while now but since I know who quick and easy it is to do (and kinda fun too!), I won't hesitate in the future.

You are very lucky to have a match after that amount of time.

If you store the paint in metal cans you may want to check them. Some rust out around the upper rim where the lid goes on. Changing the cans (or to quarts for small amounts) is little hassle.

Wow, really? We hardly ever do touch up painting, unless we move a curtain rod or patch some other kind of hole. There's just the two of us though, so not a lot of wear and tear.

Never? Unless something catastrophic should happen.
