I live in a small apartment that has light gray wall to wall carpeting. I've also seen what some of these apartments look like after the tenant moves out--dirty LR carpeting. So, since I have a dog who can have muddy feet, and I am always coming and going in and out of the LR, I bought a fake Oriental carpet to go on top of the wall to wall in the LR.
But it tends to walk. On one end it's anchored by the heavy tv and stand and the edge of a bookcase plus a heavy chair. On the other end it's anchored by a heavy recliner. The tv end is the problem end because on one side of the heavy tv there is the heavy chair that helps hold it down. Trouble is, I want to get rid of that chair and put a Boston rocker in its place. And the trouble with that is that a Boston rocker is pretty light and it won't anchor the rug!
So I guess the question is, is there some way to hold that corner of the rug down once I take the heavy chair away? Something like velcro for rugs? Nail it to the floor LOL? Lead weights? Any ideas?
I was just looking this up. I saw rug tape, and there are mixed reviews on it, seems to work well for some depending on the type of rug and flooring. Also saw some kind of velcro type "anchors". I'm going to keep searching, I need to keep a mat from slipping around over a short pile carpet.
So far the rug tape is looking like the best option. Too late to buy a rubber backed rug and I already had a rubbery mat under the hall runner and it didn't help at all.

There's two-sided carpet tape. This works well for a heavier type of rug.
I've used it for lightweight rugs sitting on top of carpet. It doesn't work that well, since a lightweight rug atop carpet tends to walk a lot and very easily. Still, it does work for a while. You'd just have to replace the carpet tape repeatedly.
It's best to get a heavy weight area rug to sit atop carpet. If it's weighted down on one end by a tv, that would probably be enough. But if you need an unweighted-down corner kept in place, the two-sided carpet tape should work well, esp since some sort of item is also sitting on top. (Heavy weight area rugs tend to have a woven backing, too, which walks a little less than the smoother backs of lightweight rugs.)

We use this stuff, it's somewhat sticky without leaving any residue or damage to the floor. It works almost like suction cups. We cut it just within an inch of the carpet edges so it can't show.
Well, the rug tape is going to be cheap, so try it and see.
After that I'd go with long tacks. Right through the existing carpet into the subfloor. Landlord will never know. When they go to change out the carpet, the subfloor's already full of tack holes from the edge strips, and staple holes everywhere from securing the padding (unless they glued it down in which case it's even worse). A few wee holes in the existing carpet won't hurt it.
I bought a roll of double sided carpet tape for a few area rugs and they held until I took them up. I got it at the At Home store.
