As a Certified flooring failure investigator, I have seen first hand what these monsters do to carpet fibers.

For one, the units that do not adjust height, can be a big problem.
two, the brushes, they are making them stiffer and stiffer. What this does in conjunction with the no height adjustment and strong suction, it cards the twist right out of the face yarn. It combs out the twist. This leads to premature matting and the carpet looks like it is years old, instead of the months old it really is.

Take your vacuum, and look at the rideplate where the brushes are. Do they protrude out past the bottom plate? With this style, even soft bristles cause accelerated wear.

The first beater bars did not have brushes at all. They had a raised smooth hump running the length of the roller bar. it acted like hanging a rug over a clothes line and beating it to lift out the dirt. They got a bright idea and started adding a brush just to one side of the bar with a hump opposite.
Now there are multiple brushes all the way across. Work great on hard surface, but will destroy your carpet prematurely, a condition I call "ugly out"

The carding also makes light reflect differently, same as a matted down entanglement condition.

We have only been in our new home for not even 2 months and DH traded my Bissell for a Kirby (I hate it) and my carpet looks horrible since he has been using it on the floors.

I discovered how important the padding is to the appearance, feel and life of carpet when we replaced our carpet (Maslon & Karistan) with the exact same carpet but upgraded the padding. What a difference! The new carpet feels so much nicer to the step/touch, doesn't mat like it did before & just looks nicer and its been down for almost two years now. Investment in upgraded padding is well worth it!
