I have a question about this siding. It was already determined that our property has the siding and a lawsuit was settled years back. We are getting ready to re-paint, we have four coats of paint over 26 years. Do you know if we should brush or spray ? Our painter wants to spray but a couple of Homeowners said we should brush. I was under the impression that once it has layers on it, the process really shouldnt matter.
Thanks!

The main thing about spraying is to make sure they apply the rated coating per sqaure foot when spraying and know what they are doing.A good painter will use the amount of paint per the coveage on the paint can.

There are two big issues with hardboard siding. 1. The bottom edges tend to crack and then delaminate when the water drips on the bottom edge.
2. The overdriven nail holes need to be caulked to prevent water from collecting in the little recess.

A good painter can spray the house and do a good job if they know how to get a good application on the bottom edge.
Some painters with brush the bottom edge and the spray it all.

While a brush on job may seem like it would be better because its "hands on", if its not done well, and the paint isn't applied at the correct rate, it will still be a crappy job.

Are you really only having problems at a few areas where the siding is deteriorating? Is at the lower say 4-5 feet of the walls at a few areas? if so, consider simply replacing this siding first, it will save you a bunch of aggravation. The downside: the pattern of the new siding will not match.
