I worked for quite awhile in the linen department of a major department store and I can clue you in to an important aspect of thread count. Very few sheets are actually over 200 thread count. But many companies use threads that are made of multiple fibers twisted together in a single thread, so they're allowed by law to claim the sheet has a higher TC. So if the label says "600 thread count" it's actually 200 threads per sq. in., with each thread composed of three fibers. 1,000 TC is 200 threads composed of five fibers. These fibers can make the sheet somewhat beefier than a 200 TC sheet, or silkier if silkier threads are used, but there are not 600 equally sized threads in that one sq. in. If there were, the sheet would be stiff as a board. In fact, a higher TC sheet might even pill more, because there are more skinny fibers to break off.

Also, Stearns & Foster is a high-end mattress manufacturer (I used to sell mattresses, too). They don't actually MAKE sheets, they just sold their name to someone who's manufacturing sheets. I doubt they would sell to a low-end company in order to protect their reputation, but these sheets are probably manufactured in the same place other better brands like Ralph Lauren or Wamsutta are milled.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with these sheets -- I haven't slept on them. But take grandiose claims about any sheet or towel with a grain of salt.

I bought 1000 count sheets at BB&B a year ago (I forget which brand) and after three washings the color on the pillow cases got splotches. Unfortunately I did not keep the receipt or the packaging or I would have returned them. Absolutely infuriating. I had the same thing happen to towels from BB&B, and my cousin got towels from BB&B off of her wedding registry and her towels got splotches on them. So I refuse to buy linens, etc. from there and I don't recommend anyone else does.
