Rekeying locks - Kiwkset and Schlage - Common Key Possible? (best, replace)

Hello everyone,

I just bought a house and would like to rekey the locks, but the front door has a different brand of lock (Kwikset, Schlage) than the side doors, thus different key types. I'd like to have one common key for all 3 locks, and I'd prefer not to replace any of the locks since they're decorative types.

Is there a way to replace just the cylinder in the schlage (front door) to match the kwikset cylinders in the other locks, and then repin them all?

Replace the Kwikset lockset(s) with Schlage then have them keyed alike.

No, their guys are built differently. The best you can do is to buy the one lock or two locks you need to complete your set. I'm guessing you have a KW1 type of key for the Kwikset and a SC1 type of key for the Schlage?

Actually.... with certain locks (usually commercial grade and hardly ever the ones available at box stores) it can be done by putting a universal cylinder in. Kwikset will not accept the universal cylinder... ever. They design their locks different than the rest of the industry and specifically for residential mass use. But if you have good quality Schlage (deadbolts better fit than knobs/levers) you can put the universal cylinder set to the KW1 keyway. http://jmlock.com/uslock-1599-univer...-cylinder.aspx
