Clealy no one here has ever looked under and at the back of "cleaned" carpet or taken a pies of "cleaned carpet and whacked it against something. Carpet cleaners do not work. They remove some dirt hair etc from the top. If you pull up a iece of freshly cleaned but dry carpet and beat it with a heavy object, you will discover all the pretties that remoin in te carpeting, then look at the back/underside.

There is someting of a difference between staying at a hotel, where you must live in filth for a few days and choosing to live in other people's filth. There are many things, you just have to accept outside of your control/home, but I draw the line at used underwear and used carpet.

Oh and socks. I will just wear no socks, before I use someone elses socks, but that is more avoiding Plantar warts than just ick.

I actually don't even like carpet. Even with regular vacuuming and stream cleaning icky stuff collects under the carpet. If someone spills a glass of water or anything else mold can grow in the pad.

I greatly prefer hard surfaces. I have quite a few rugs but none so large that I can't toss in the washer.

When I sold my last house I just gave a carpet allowance rather than put in new carpet because I knew the new owners would want to replace it anyway.

Yes, we kept the carpet in our house when we moved in, this past January. Carpeting is really expensive to replace. So far no one in our house has died or contracted a contagious disease from the existing carpet.

How the heck is used underwear the same as used carpet? Are you sitting naked on the carpet that much?

I understand taking out even still usable carpet if you want floors instead, or even for a different color scheme or whatever. Totally makes sense. I don't understand taking out 2 or 3 year old carpet if it was otherwise acceptable for what you wanted, just because someone else used it for a few years. In a couple years your own "new" carpet would become the same way.

Staying in a hotel should be quite frightening then if nearly new carpet in a house is a big hangup.

There are studies that seem to indicate that exposure to a certain amount of "dirt" is essential for proper development of our immune systems and a theory that the rapidly increasing incidence of allergies and autoimmune diseases in the USA (especially in children) and other developed nations has to do with going overboard trying to be "clean" and get rid of the "nasty germs" (some of which are essential to our health).

Just food for thought in this discussion.

There are also studies that indicate mold is harmful, and most carpet pad I have seen has mold, regardless of the condition of the carpet.

Do a good job and for all practical purposes(excluding....um, examining a part you will never be exposed to.) they will be close to new.

Do people buy used cars where people farted in the seat? I personally don't buy used cars, but I know the OP does. But I have no problem buying a house with older carpet.

Even the CDC says: "Molds are found in virtually every environment and can be detected, both indoors and outdoors, year round." Also, there are over 100,000 different kinds of molds.

If you exist, you are exposed to mold, in other words. Even if you have no carpet at all.
