Your countertops sound like mine. Slate colored. If it's what I think it is, it's a neutral color. It should look great with white appliances. This time around, we put in white cabinets with an Indian Slate colored laminate counter and it looks really nice. Of course we have SS appliances. But, just saying the slate color looks good with white.
... Colors, except white seem to go in and out of style in fads, where white is forever.
That's very true. I can remember when my folks got a new white stove around 1950. (I was little more than a toddler.) Mom kept that stove for 40 years and it never went out of style. She replaced it with another white one. Meanwhile, you had turquoise that was popular (got one in the basement), avocado, gold, almond, black and stainless. I've had 'em all. White has never been out of style. Black and stainless aren't YET, but you can be sure they will be. White is the classic appliance color that you can always match and that never goes out of style. I'd vote white.
Stainless is also going out of style. And seriously, who wants appliances that causes you to think you are cooking in a prison or mental institution. Also, I was reading something about newer frig's that are not sticking out 3 inches in front of the counters. They are more narrow. But my search at Lowe's didn't turn up any. I guess they are too new.

They are called counter depth and are crazy expensive!
Goes to show ya just how things are different across the nation. All of the new kitchen designs here have dropped the black and stainless kitchens and it's all sterile white. I've had black before and it was a pain to keep it looking new especially the stove. Get grease on black stove and all most cleaners do is spread it around and it looks like crap.
I would agree though that you might want to add some color some where. Maybe consider a tile back splash of color.
It's crazy but I can't figure out why I didn't think of it and no one told me me, but why don't we all install our kitchen lower cabinets 3" away from the walls some how??? It would give you more counter top (cost a bit more but worth it) and then the frig wouldn't stick out so badly. Does anyone remember what the name of the new white appliances is called? Some new finish I believe I read.
