I like the old school analog type thermometers, use them in all freezers. I am amazed that most people just plug the thing in and take what they get. You need to know the temperature in a freezer or refrigerator to successfully store food for the length of time you would expect in each.

Have never used a digital freezer thermometer, would wonder what kind of battery it needs to work at deep freeze temperature.

Digital for freezer or fridge.
Sensor on the end of a wire.

And it appears they need batteries.

Can batteries and a wire survive at 5 degrees?

I agree with analog, except, so far all the ones on Ebay are centigrade.
I think I'll pass on the one with the wire and batteries. Seems to add more things that could go wrong.

Batteries do not work well in the cold.

So electronic is OK so long as the electronic part with the batteries is not in the freezer. And the room the freezer is in is not a room which gets very cold (like garage or outside).

I have old fashioned mechanical refrigerator and freezer thermometers and they have worked fine for years.

The sensor/wire are the only components that go inside the freezer.

You beat me to it!

I wouldn't use that because it might interfere with the seal. You know that suction you feel when you open fridge door? Won't work if there is even a minute hole caused by the wire.

So you close the freezer door on the wire that is half in and half out. (sensor in and thermometer out)

A nice analog $2.00 model from Grainger will work perfect.
