We are in the same process, refitting the kitchen. We have chosen costa smerelda granite, a light green, and are considering a light offwhite/green/yellowish marble 3/4" tiles for the backsplash, as our walls are yellow. Our backsplash is 12" in some places and 14" in others and our kitchen isn't large; our home is traditional. We're keeping our painted offwhite cabinets from 1937, since we like some of their features. We were advised by the designer in the store to use a 1/3 2/3 rule with the backsplash, using about 4" granite, then tile on top of that. Then the tile installer came over and said not to use granite at the backsplash, as the depth of the two materials is different. At this point, I'm in a quandry, and would appreciate feedback. With a smaller backsplash as we have (compared to some), is it better to stick with just the tile? Or is the tile guy being a little lazy?

You can purchase granite tile that is the same pattern as your granite used on the counter tops, it's thin like the b/s tile, which eliminits the problem of difference of thickness. Your installer should know that..
For me personally I prefer no granite backsplash except in the bathrooms or laundry room. I prefer tile in the kitchen as a backsplash. I think the tile will bring out the granite and it will blend beautifully. For me personally its like too many things competing with each other. You have the countertop, then backsplash , then tile, then cabinets. I think of resale value when I do things. I may never move..but just in case.

2. Backsplash from counter to bottom of cabinet
Having both will look horrible
