Saturday night while watching tv I hear the garage door open. Everyone accounted for, no one using remotes but yet the door opened. It happened again about half hour later but this time the door was locked so it only went up a bit. I was creeped out.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Yes, it's actually not that uncommon. There are only so many frequencies your garage door can be on, and it's not uncommon for a neighbor's remote to actually land on the same one you have. Just reset your frequency and you should be fine. Even though it happens, there should be enough random combinations that it wouldn't happen twice to you.

I'll bet someone near you used the same company to install their door opener and you happened to have the same frequency remote as Falconhead mentioned. It's not uncommon.

In CA years ago, it was a problem when Air Force 1 (with Reagan) would come in to land. Some kind of jamming electronics sent garage doors up and down all through some of the local neighborhoods .

Nothing to do with you, as those were much simpler doors and long ago, but entertaining nonetheless....

new garage door openers should not allow this. They have rolling codes that are synced with the remote so even if someone snoops your radio frequency they cant replay the last code.

Hey, thanks for the replies. It kinda eased my freaking out mode. Trainwreck...the visual was hilarious. I would suppose the mechanism is about 16 or so years old so not new. We reset it but still wanted to ask the question as it gave me the creeps.

It should not be easy for a neighbor's control to trigger someone else's garage door. If it does - then change the code immediately.

Newer (last ten years?) units have rolling codes as you said and this should be impossible.

Yes that happened to me (probably 25 years ago +/-) a new door that I had installed was on the same code as the neighbors across the street. It was spooky when it first seemed to open on its own.

I agree its not as likely to happen with newer systems.

And hope the neighbor doesn't do the same and pick the same new code, since their garage door may have been mysteriously opening and closing too!

Although, as you and the other posters mentioned, this shouldn't happen with any recent model. I still worry in the back of my mind that my garage door might not stay shut, from past (like 20 years ago) experiences with the older units... seemed like certain nearby construction equipment, as well as other people's controllers occasionally, would interfere with it...
