Live traps if you don't mind getting rid of them. Kill traps are the only way to be sure - I would kill rats. I trap groundhogs on my property and set prong raps for moles. I would like to shoot the groundhogs but have neighbors. All rodents are destructive.
If you think rodents are destructive, you should see the havoc wrung by primates!

Seriously don't bother. You'll be wasting money and time. You want to stop rats put out rat trap or poison. Or get a few outdoor cats
