This is a good point, I'll need to take a closer look. On the surface I didn't see anything off, but I admit not looking too heavily.

As I previously mentioned, By your description it sounds like that cheap-ass latex "red wood stain"- and that S#!T will definitely F-up a good stain&seal.

Maybe. Looks like spray paint to me, frankly. But maybe it was that. You're talking that Behr product, right?
Also I priced out just replacing the deck online, and the highside is nearly $3k. No way I can swing that at this time. But I did see some better designs than what I have, so I may end up going that route later.
