For the past several days, I could smell natural gas near the gas meter outside my house. The gas pipe goes through the wall and enters the basement; I did not smell natural gas in the basement and house. My nose is pretty sensitive to smell, LOL. So the gas leak seems from the gas meter ONLY. I have ordered the gas leak test spray to do the test myself.
Should I call the gas company first? Is the gas company responsible for fixing it since the leak is outside my house and from the meter? Some people mentioned before that gas company will simply turn off the gas and take away the meter, and let you find a plumb to fix it. But this time, the issue is with the meter itself.
You call the gas company immediately. As said above you could be on the phone to 911 explaining why your house disappeared!
Gas companies want to know immediately, they'll respond quickly to prevent any disasters.
I had that once. That's why they put something in there that smells distinctive, so that you will notice it and call them immediately. This you should do.
Back in the early 70's the house next door blew up from a leaking meter. The man lost his wife and girl in the explosion. There wasn't much left. I had a house next door when I left for work and a pile of burnt rubble when I came home. Call the gas company immediately, as in NOW.
I called the gas company, and the technician came within 10 minutes. He did a test and tightened up the valve from underground pipe to the meter, then it was fixed.
Thank you all.
