Hello all,

I am hoping to get some input on something that happened in my apartment today. The maintenance crew from the apartment management company came prepared to scrape the ceilings due to my complaints about cracks in the popcorn ceiling. Obviously, they were clueless as to the fact that it contained asbestos--its some pretty horrible customer service so that was expected. The lead renter told them to simply fill in the cracks and gave them a product name. I had to leave at this point...

I got back tonight and there was pieces of popcorn all over the floor. It wasn't a disaster and took me a second to notice, but there are at least 20 pieces or more on the ground. This is obviously insane and I was very angry. I asked my roommate who stayed to watch the process and he said they came off when the foam was being applied to fill the crack. I am so angry and wish I had stayed to prevent this as these morons obviously couldn't.

I am planning to clean up the popcorn after spraying it with water and then disposing of in a plastic bag. From here I will wet the floor again and then vacuum. Is there anything else that should be done? Also, is this a severe amount of exposure?

Thank you much

How do you know it had asbestos in it? Is the building older than being built prior to 1980? The asbestos popcorn ceiling materials sold around here were not fluffy but hard as a stucco. If the materials you cleaned up was lightweight, it was probably pearlite. Pearlite is the typical popcorn product sold since the 70's. It is not dangerous at all. Even if the materials was asbestos, it not likely to cause you any concerns. As a teen, I handled tons of it along with hundreds of boxcars of asbestos siding. I'm 69 years old. I haven't died yet.

Well, the apartment has warnings in the closets that the popcorn textured ceiling contains asbestos. The building is older than 1980--it was constructed in 50s.

You really need to be in a cloud of asbestos dust all day for months on end in order for it to cause damage. The little bit that you as an adult will encounter from the ceiling is, for all intents, harmless.
