Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone has seen anything like this?

Stapled down flooring - Album on Imgur

about 2/3s of the floor in my upstairs (1931 Tudor in Seattle) has staples running most of the length of the room. It looks like they're in the joists, but not every joist space has them and they don't go all the way to the walls in places (we have a small area within a short dormer, about 5' tall, with no staples at all).

I'm guessing someone did it to keep the floors from squeaking? Has anyone seen this before?

Seen it before? No.
As to the reason why- I'm quite sure you "nailed" it- was done to remove squeaks, was the floor covered by carpet before?

Yup, we just pulled up the carpet in preparation for having the hardwood redone.
