usually it is because after a few years they can be quite boring to keep going to as well as once the novelty wears off having 2 sets of all your expenses isn't much fun in my opinion .

It depends. I knew a guy who lived in Philly and owned a place at the Jersey shore. He stayed there for a couple of weeks every June and September. He went down there at least every couple of weeks to check on it. He was always fixing something or painting. He really seemed to enjoy that. He rented it in the summer to cover the taxes and maintenance costs.
