Then he put simple triangular joiners on each corner that doubled as seats for adults and babysitters. Then he hired some sand company people to fill it with nice sand. We played in that thing for hours and hours with our Tonka trucks and army men and stuff. I had the same sort of one built by a handyman for my backyard for my kids when they were little. You do have get a wire mesh cover to keep the critters out. KIds absolutely love this!

W had a sand pile. My dad just got a truck load of sand and had them dump it in a pile in the yard. It was fun to have a big hill of sand. It spread out over time and then he got another load. It was one of our favorite places to play.
No problem with cats for us, but we had the biggest baddest meanest cat you ever saw (Fred). He allowed nothing (other than our dog) on our property. He fought everything and drove them away, even our neighbors dobermen dogs. Cats, possums, dogs, foxes, you name it if it came into our yard, it found furious Fred on its back ripping it apart. His biggest challenge was a raccoon, it fought back hard. He won, but he ended up having one ear and one set of ribbons for the remainder of his life. His face was a mass of scars, but he was a sweet cat to humans although not that pretty after about his 100th fight.
However when I grew up and had kids, Fred was no more. So we had a cover on our sandbox. I think it was about 8' x 8' big enough when the kids were little.
