When we built our house 30 plus years ago, we put in a brass doorbell that is installed right in the middle of the door. Outside is is little knob that one twists back and forth to ring the bell, inside is a round brass bowl type thing that covers the "bell" mechanism. It's still going strong and we still are happy with our choice. Only thing, the screen door can't be locked; if it is locked you can't ring the bell. It's always been loud enough to hear but not loud enough to be jarring.

So, this thread motivated me to really look into what was going on with my doorbell. I started by removing the doorbell button and touching the two wires together. No chime. So, this pushes me to the chime box or the transformer. I looked at the chime box and noticed that one of the plungers was seized. I verified the connections and everything was proper. Just to make sure, I looked at the transformer with a multimeter and there was no reading on the output end, but there was a valid reading on the input end.

So, off to Home Depot I went. I ended up picking up a contractors grade doorbell kit which included new buttons, new chime box, and new transformer for about 15 bucks.

I turned off the power which controlled the doorbell. I started out by replacing the transformer which was very straight forward. I then replaced the chime box followed by the button itself. I switched the power back on and right away I noticed that the doorbell button was lit up. I pushed the button and a prompt Ding Dong chimed in the house. Success!!! At this point though, I didn't like the look of the button and the previous button was a really nice bronze looking button. I put the existing button back on and low and behold, it worked like a champ.

I suspect that somehow the chime box seized up which in turn fried the transformer.
