You're familiar with the odor of roadkill. All taps are affected. Problem started a few days ago.

Well's 300+ ft. deep and has been in use for 41 years. New water conditioner, softener, and reservoir tank installed a month ago.

Surrounded by farms, no new construction.

Web search results discuss many contaminants like sulfur, methane, et al. but this is like rotting flesh. You don't pick up this odor when the tap is running but only when you actually taste the water.

Why don't you just send a sample out to a lab for analysis?

Yikes! You're drinking this stuff? I'd have a sample to the lab in a hot minute and maybe a call in to the well guy also. Some bacteria and molds can smell horrible. How do you feel physically after tasting it? I'll be interested in learning what you find out. I had a well similar to yours for years and never had that experience, thankfully.

Sulfur can accumulate after a lot of rain, but you would smell it when taking a shower, for example.

Sounds like you might have a drain backing up into the fresh water line somewhere. I think there are reverse flow devices that prevent this, but you still need a plumber to help you diagnose it. Unless you have an open top well, it is doubtful that an animal died at the water source.

Yeah, I'm going to call-in a pro but thought someone here in the meantime might have some experience with this problem.

As for my physical status, I've started growing hair on the bald spot and there seems to be a third eye developing in the middle of my forehead. But seriously, I'm relying on Gatorade and diet Dr. Pepper for thirst quenching.

When did the taste start - you say a few days ago, but...... Try bypassing the filter and softener - some folks use the cheapest resin they can - and sometimes it'll have a funky taste to it. If bypassing it clears the taste, call the folks that sold it to you. Do some basic troubleshooting before you go off calling in techs and lab tests.....

Well water in this day and age is pretty filthy and contains all sort of contaminates.

Here are the test photos...

Check out the various options mentioned for cleaning the water.

I think definitely call the company that installed your water softener a month ago.

I believe there are do-it-yourself testing kits for checking certain aspects of water quality at places like Walmart or Lowes, maybe you can find a culprit there.

I personally just drink purified drinking water, which is about a dollar a gallon. Probably the same in quality, but eh..

Call your local extension office, have that water tested asap.
Some helpful links to help you.
