We need to replace the ceiling fan in our bedroom, so should be pretty straightforward. We have replaced ceiling fans before without a problem. My question is that the ceiling fan in our bedroom has an 18 inch down rod because it is on a vaulted ceiling.
Will any standard ceiling fan allow for installation with an 18 inch down rod? I know it needs to be purchased separately, but will everything else be the same? We are looking to replace a fairly basic Hunter fan with a new fairly basic Hunter fan, if that makes a difference.
If it's a downrod model, it can be used with any length downrod. Most new fans come with very long wiring to accommodate up to 4-foot (or longer) rods.
There are some convertible models, but in general flush-mount and specialty-mount fans can't be converted to a downrod or adjusted in mounting height.
(Hint: if you're using a remote with receiver pack that goes in the fan base, put the receiver in place and tape the wires out of the way BEFORE you hang the fan. It can be nearly impossible to get the unit in there afterwards on some box/mount combinations.)
