Can someone school me about what's going on? It seems there were/are numerous class action suits against shingle manufacturers.
Two or three years ago, a guy stopped at our house and told my wife that we may be eligible for a free roof because our shingles had been declared faulty under one of the suits. I don't know how he determined that since he never went up on the roof for a closer look. We blew him away, thinking that he was just another roofer looking to sell a roof that wasn't needed.
Fast forward to the last several months. We have two or three acquaintances that have new roofs under some sort of claim. Our next door neighbor is one and he's having a new roof installed as I write this. He said it is being paid for under some type of claim but I didn't get the details. Our houses were built at the same time and by the same builder, probably using the same shingles so I wonder where I stand in all this.
Our house was built in 2006, so it's about 14 years old. There are some mildew stains on the shingles in places, but I see no damage while standing in the yard. And no leaks. However, I have not had a roof inspector go up and look closely. I have an extra square of the shingles that were originally installed, left by the builder, so I know the brand and type.
Today an "Estimator/Insurance Specialist" left an information package on our door and wrote "You may get a free roof from your insurance company." He works for a roofing company. Any advice on how I might proceed? Call this guy, my insurance company, call a non-biased inspector?
How can you figure this out? When I bought my house it had a new roof that was done in the last 2-3 years. Is there a way to tell? I know that roofer did a ****ty job reinstalling the gutters. I had to get them re-hang because they wearing in some places.

The OP stated they have a bundle leftover.
When ours was done I asked for an extra one too. They aren't that expensive for them to give you one for repairs.
If you post a picture in a roofing forum, or maybe reddit somewhere, I'm sure folks could tell you. I can distinguish between Atlas, Certainteed, and GAF for the most part on a basic level if the roof is new. Certainteed to GAF is tougher but Atlas, at least the ones used in my neighborhood, has a certain look. No idea about Owens Corning.
I think because I had chicken pox I’m more eligible for shingles than someone who didn’t. I’ve never thought about getting a disease like that and suing anybody for it. If a doctor misdiagnoses it I would, but even then a lawyer and his 50% fee can figure that shid out on my behalf.

But you should consider suing the comedy school you went to.
Shingles as on the roof of a house, not the residue of having chicken pox. Sorry if I confused you.
I read the long thread posted by rfb. Not much specific information other than a discussion of morals.
My shingles are CertainTeed Classic Horizon Shangles according to the wrapping on the bundle left by the builder of the house from whom we bought. Wrapping says they were made in Oxford, NC. I have to think this is what was used on the roof.
I have no roof issues at this time, but I am going to employ an independent inspector to look at the roof and make an assessment. If I have normal wear and tear, I'll pay for a new roof when the time comes. If there is premature failure, I'll take it up with CertainTeed.
Thanks for the insight, folks.
