I have about a 1/4" gap in the middle of a metal door where it meets the latch. The rest of the door is ok. I put 4 shims (1/8") at the middle hinge, and it didn't help. How much more can I shim the middle hinge?

You can shim it a foot and it ain’t gonna change a thing.

Try shimming the jamb- you'll probably get what you’re after.

Sounds like either the strike or hinge jamb is bowed, did you put a straightedge on both sides of the jamb to see where the problem is?

No, but that's a good idea. I thought something might be bowed, but couldn't imagine how something like that could happen.

Just leave it. A gap in your front teeth is often considered sexy for some odd reason. All you need to do is make it trendy to have a door gap and you will be cutting edge!

If the door to jamb spacing gap is only larger at the strike plate area, then that leg of the jamb must be bowed.

Before deciding to pack hinges, you need to determine exactly what the problem is.
