I'm making a worm bin out of a large plastic bin with a lid that has is about 4 inches in dept. I want to fill the lid with spray foam for insulation.

There are at least a half a dozen different kinds of foam insulation in a can.

What would be the easiest/best kind to use?

I thought about putting this in the gardening forum, but decided there might be more people who would have a better idea about foam insulation here.

Thanks.

Great Stuff comes to mind, but I'm sure any of them would work.

As luck would have it, there are at least a half a dozen different kinds of Great Stuff foam. Wouldn't you know.

Great Stuff "Big Gap Filler" ad says it stick to "most plastics." I hope the plastic lid is in that category. We'll see.

I plan to just go back and forth until the 4' x 2' lid is about 4" deep.

How many cans do you think it would take?

Thanks.

Probably easier/better to use foam board. Uniform finish. Cut to size, glue to lid with appropriate glue- done.

Using the spray foam will be a mess- and a very non-uniform surface.

For something that small and straightforward I'd go to my local landfill or transfer station and check out the construction debris area for a piece of foam board. Maybe worth asking a hardware store if they have any remnant leftovers from a customer order. Re-use/re-purpose and no propellants or aerosol cans ending up in a landfill.

If you want to use foam in a can, I would use the white DAP foam made for use around electric outlets. It stays soft and flexible and does not expand massively like the other types of canned foam. the other kids (most of them) get hard and brittle and will break apart if the lid is opened and closed with any frequency.
