We have two. An American Standard and some fancy Euro gizmo my wife wanted (Brill or something like that).
My American Standard cuts very, very well. I mow .33 acres (less house) and it's no sweat. I've had it for 10 years and once every two years I sharpen the cutting bar and it cuts like new. Very easy to use, always starts and EASY maintenence. Just brush the clippings off, spritz with WD-40 and it's ready for the next mow.
Does it mow every single piece of grass? Nope. But it gets 90% of it. I leave the other 10% for the next time. The yard looks fine, the excercise is great and my 9 year old son can use it without fear of him slipping a small foot under a gasser blade.
Great mower. You can buy it at most hardware stores. Scotts is the same basic design and you can sharpen it yourself. My advice? Nix the high end push reel mowers- this design has been working for like 75 years for a reason. It works.
For Bermuda, Zoysia, St Augustine, Bent grass - I say Go for it.
We had one but for Fescue we could not find one with a high enough height adjustment
My experience was it did miss some tough weeds that would survive the blades.
I think it is really healthier for the grass in terms of damage to the blades but you do have to keep them sharp. They do also make electric lawnmowers with a rotary blade like the gasoline ones.
Mostly Kentucky 31 and some other blends. Recommended height here is about 2.5" or so. I think finer fescues a bit taller.
