I live in an area where there are high radon levels and have bought 2 home that have not been tested and probly have high levels but both homes were older and had many areas for the radon to escape and yes we probly do inhale the stuff but what am I supposed to do tell my kids that they can not play cars on the grass cause the radon levels may kill them. If I lived my life worried about every little thing I would live in a bubble and never eat or drink anything cause everything is bad for you now.

Playing cars on the grass is not a problem.....while there is radon outside your house it quickly dissipates into the air.......playing cars in an enclosed basement with high radon levels is a different story.......they are in an enclosed area at floor level when the radon concentration is greatest.....not to mention that children are at greater risk due to the fact that their cell change/growth rate is higher that adults. While no one wishes to live in a bubble its sheer stupidity to expose them to a risk that can be easily detected and eliminated. Your their father/parent......you should be ashamed to gamble with the health future....your supposed to protect them.....instead all I detect from you is indifference even though you know there are high radon levels in the area. How sad.

Sorry......just too much crap to wade through in what seems to be an onslaught of posts to befuddle any layman who reads them......you only seem to want radon described in a manner comparable to radiation found in nuclear submarines so you can better relate to it. No can do Mr. Cosmic. Look.......believe its all bogus if you wish and hang your hat on your government conspiracy theory although I have no idea what the government has to gain by warning the public radon causes lung cancer.....in fact they list it as the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking ! More government conspiracy hype I guess ? And while your considering the government conspiracy theory you better add in our neighbor to the north....Canada....seems they are in on the conspiracy too.......oh yeah, and the United kingdom......oh, and don't forget France, Germany and most of Europe !!! My god.....its a global conspiracy........how do you suppose our EPA got all those countries to join in on their "scare the public" conspiracy ? And last but not least free speech has its limitations......you can't yell FIRE in a movie theater and since New Jersey has one of the worst radon problems of all the states the DEP has set more stringent protocol than most......requiring certification for those who dispurse information about radon testing and mitigation to prevent mis-information on the subject. The law says you can't present yourself as an expert on radon and offer professional advice on radon or testing or mitigation techniques in this State without this certification even if you used to serve on a nuclear submarine. There are only 15 DEP licensed radon mitigation specialists in the State and at last check I didn't see anyone who used to serve on a nuclear submarine on the list. Those who doubt this are free to contact Anita Kopera, director of the DEP radon division, at 800-648-0394 and confirm this for themselves. Too difficult to make a phone call ? Look up radon in your local yellow pages and read the DEP warning about having to have a DEP license to practice radon testing and mitigation in this State. Sorry....X nuclear submarine servicemen are not included.

don't you dare tell me to be ashamed when you live in and area that is built on limestone. I have plenty of ventelation in my home and do not have a finished basement because it is a stone foundation. I do keep my kids safe the best that WE can B/C you cannot protect them from everything. How sad it is that you feel the need to judge people when you don't even know anything about me or my situation! I don't judge people because I leave it to GOD to do! and my point about living in a bubble is that somethings get blown way out of proportion and I am not saying that radon isnt a big deal but it is something that is taken care of in our area! I am very sorry that you miss took my post. And what else should I do sell my home, have my DH quit his very good job and try and find a new state to live & start over! Don't ever imply that I am a bad parent because you don't know me or my family and if you did you would never dream of impling anything like that.

you people are getting way off of the OPs question because you are to busy nit picking each other! The OP wanted to know if you buy a house with radon issues and I said I would because you know what it can be fixed! Quit the nit picking it is fine to post your views but to attack everyone with a different opinion isn't fair either because it is not answering the OPs question. I understand wanting to inform the OP but it isn't doing anybody any good to fight including myself!

Look.....your right.....I don't know you or your family....its your poor decisions that make you guilty.....not my personal knowledge of you or your family. You admitted that you live in an area where YOU KNOW high radon levels exist yet you've chosen to ignor that fact and haven't displayed a minimal amount of intelligence or care by taking taking the most minimal step possible to protect your family and children which is to test. A test kit at Lowes or Home Depot costs about $15.....hardly a reason to have your husband find a new job or move your family elsewhere. God isn't going to test your home or provide a radon reduction system if it needs one. Yes....One clearly can't protect their children from everything but this is one health issue that you can protect them from with minimal effort and cost. I didn't mistake your post at all......your gambling with your health and your childrens health that the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking is in your neighbors house and not yours. I'm sorry....your position is hard to defend.....chosing to remain in the dark about radon levels in your home in a known high radon area is gambling with your childrens health and thats just dumb !

You know what I am done with you and your way of talking to people it is rude. You don't seem to care that you belittle people. and my mistake my house is not in a high radon area but we do have radon because the whole county is and a the surrounding area is on limestone. the only way for my family and the families around us to get away from radon would be to move out of state. and my house is vented. I am very sorry for you that you feel the need to be so rude! Good luck in your life and Good Day!

Good Lord, I hope you don't!
That would be irresponsible, scaring them that way.

Outdoors is perfectly fine.

I would never do that! I have more sense than that. I don't want my kids to be afraid of everything! I don't even allow my kids to talk about their dolls being dead or killed because I feel that they are to young for that! I was just making a point. I got defensive because of the other poster attacking me when I have lived in this area all of my life and so has my family and my DHs family and none of them had died of cancer. If I lived in a brand new house I would worry more than I do now because I have many places for the radon to escape.

First your house is in a high radon zone.....now its not. Now your guessing you have radon because your on limestone....and.....the whole country does...... when the fact is that doesn't mean you do at all !!! Then you state the only way to get away from radon is to move out of the state......if the whole country has it what good would that do ? And.....I have no idea what it means when you say your house is "vented"....does that mean you have a radon reduction system ? To be perfectly honest perhaps you shouldn't be posting on this radon issue at all until you actually know what you do have.....your lack of knowledge pertaining to your own situation only creates confusion to those trying to respond.
