Was it the outdoor unit?? Maybe a dead animal inside it? Condensor fan motor or another component going bad could have kind of a burning funky sort of smell.

If the meter man smelled it, it was probaly outside at the compressor. Go outside and smell around. It may be the motor, or coolant leaking, or an animal. Check outside. If you smell it call the service man. Let them find out what the smell could be.

When is th elast time that you cleaned out the condensate drip pan? It may well just be mold.

Hopefully it doesn't have a acidic smell. It's unmistakable if it's acidic refrigerant. That and a bad fan motor or burnt up electronics is all I can think of besides what's already been mentioned.
