I have a bedspread that is 30% cotton and 70% polyester and I know both cotton and poly can be washed in a machine. Why then does the tag on the spread say to "Dry Clean Only"? Does something "magical and mysterious" happen when the 2 fabrics are used together...something no one told me about?

OK to wash it, but it will be almost impossible to iron if you don't like wrinkles. That is probably why they want you to dry clean it.

That makes sense. Somehow my little bitty brain couldn't think past the actual "washing" part. Thank you!

Some manufacturers just skip to the easy part and say "dry clean only" - when it isn't necessary (they are covering their butts) - I would certainly wash that bedspread in cold and dry on a low to medium setting.

So true. Except for rayon. I washed a rayon dress in cold water. It came out of the washing machine the fit for a child.

Nah, just fluff it in the dryer with a few towels to keep it from bunching up and damp iron if it is a bit wrinkled.

The only other reason I can think to dry clean would be if it has some sort of stuffing or batting in it that would bunch up when you wash it. A gentle cycle on your washer would help but no guarantees.

If the bedspread has any sort of batting in it, that could be why it's DCO. Depending on the construction, the batting could lump up in between the layers of fabric and you wouldn't be able to fix it.

Nope, no batting in it. It's smoothe as a baby's rump so I'm going to go for it. Thank you everybody!!!

It isn't ruined. That's just what Rayon does. Iron it while damp and it will stretch back out to size.

Actually rayon does shrink. I washed a dress once and it turned into a mini. Ended up just donating it.
