Can anyone explain the STEP septic I've seen on a lot of houses and how it works. Do I need to add anything to the septic periodically? Should I have it inspected prior to purchasing a home?
As far as I know, it is just like septic, but it is maintained by the utility company. I did hear that you have to use the Rid-X stuff. I don't know anyone who has a house on step, so I don't have any experience infomation on it.

With a STEP System, a house has a septic tank. The effluent is pumped to a common force main in the subdivision. The Septic Tank with the pump is called Septic Tank Effluent Pump or STEP tank. The effluent is pumped to a recirculating sand filter, where it circulates about 5 times before going through ultraviolent light disinfection and dispossed of, usually by underground drip tubing. The water is very clean and odorless at this point. It sparkles! If you had to choose between a glass of this and tap water to drink, you would chose this if you didn't know better. It's that clean.
