I wonder if you accidentally bought the A&H that has Oxyclean added to it?
We have a lot of black clothing and I have never noticed that with the "plain" formula. As mentioned we use the powdered, and I always add it to the wash water first to dissolve, then add the clothes.
No, Oxy-Clean is not on the label. And I fill the washer 1/4 full with water and start the agitator to dissolve the detergent first. After that, I fill the washer and add the clothes. It has even lightened up all my black socks, too.
I've used it to remove dried on paint - washed, dried, then oops, where'd that paint come from. Lestoil, soak overnight, wash - check - if stain still there, more lestoil, soak longer, wash - usually out by that time.

Octagon or Fels Naptha. These are bar soaps. Rub on the stain, and put a few shavings in the washing machine. It takes red Georgia clay out... plain mud, shouldn't be a problem...
