What are some of the common causes that could be the source of my dryer not drying my clothes well ? It's a whirlpool and only 3 years old. I clean the filter every 2 days and the external vent on the outside of my house is also free and clear. What could be the problem ?

We had this happen and the fuse or something like that was out-it was a simple repair.

Either you have an air flow problem or you have a heat input problem. Turn the dryer on and go look at the exhaust vent - feel of the air flow. You should have a substantial volume of warm, damp air initially.

Check your fuses if you have fuses - frequently the blower motor runs on 110, essentially one "leg" of the 220 that runs the heaters - if one of the fuses blows, maybe because it was not installed tight enough, maybe because it just got old - that *could* take out your heat without taking out your blower.

If you have breakers, most likely the above discussion about fuses is N/A to you.

If you have an air flow problem, it's pretty common for lint to build up in the exhaust hose (and this is a pretty common source of house fires, so take care if that if it happens...)

Is it an electric or is it a gas dryer?

The external vent may be clear from inspection, buy what about the route from the dryer to the vent, could it be clogged?

If it is a gas dryer, is the gas ON to the dryer?

Do you hear an ignition sound if it is a gas dryer? Meaning, is it trying to ignite?

When my dryer isn't drying my clothes, it's always because I accidently left my washer spin cycle is set on gentle.

It's the first thing the dryer repair person asks me to check when I call. And he is always right----it's not the dryer!

Cehck for lint buildup in the hose and in the filter area of the dryer. Remove the filter and use a bottle brush of some length to clean out lint stuck there.

Good point - around here electric is so prevalent I "ass-u-me-d" it was an electric dryer.

Gas turned off or ignition system not working (none of them have pilot lights anymore AFIK) would definitely make a gas dryer not work.

This is, admittedly, a stretch but you may need to really scrub your lint filter with a brush and dish-soap. If you use a lot of dryer sheets the spaces in the lint filter screen can become restricted with fabric softener gunk.
