I am planning on installing some cabinets in my laundry room that match what I have in my kitchen. I have a opening in my laundry room that is about 5 or 6 feet wide. If the cabinet is narrower than the opening, how do i fill the whole space?
If there is enough space you could add some small shelves on one side to hold laundry detergent or other stuff. I would think you would need a gap of at least 6" to do that.
5 or 6 feet? You need to have a more accurate measurment then that when ordering cabinets.
Here is how it works. All cabinetry no matter how good or bad comes in 3" increments starting at 9" to maximum of 48" wide. Bathroom vanities go up to 60" wide. When there is a balance left you order what is called fillers. These fillers come in only 2 widths, 3" and 6" wide. These fillers also come in 3 heights, 30" which you use for bases and 30" uppers, then you have 36" tall and 42" tall for the other 2 standard sized uppers.
So if your room is 62" wide, you buy two 30" wide by whatever height you want, and buy one 3" filler which you will rip 1" from each factory edge. I say 1" each side because you want the cabinets centered. You do not want to put the whole 2" filler on one side just because it's easier. And don't forget your crown molding.
Whatever you do, don't get raped by the big orange who only wants your little green. Be an educated consumer.
If you can't get cabinets to fit the width of the wall, why not build open shelves that do fit the space? You can fill the space with exact width open shelves and make them 2 or 3 or 4 shelves high depending on the height you want. Do they have to match the kitchen? Same color and open shelves will look close enough and be more functional. Just a thought.
Thanks for the help. The shelving is a great idea, although I currently have shelving and I am replacing it with the cabinets to give it a cleaner look. I am a bit of a minimalist so I don't like seeing things out in the open.
The opening is 62" wide.... Talked to the local supplier of the cabinets that I use and basically confirmed all of your recommendations. Price is about $400, and I will install myself.

Let me know if that sounds outrageous.
Thanks!
Wow did I guess that measurement or what? 62" huh? $400 is not too bad for average inexpensive builders grade oak cabinets. So you bought two W3030's right? Plus an F3?

You da man..... yeah they were basically the base cabinet option from the builder, look pretty nice though.
