I will be moving into a home in the near future, and want to have the berber carpets cleaned. I've been reading up on the pros and cons of the different methods, including "oxy" cleaning, steam cleaning, and the rotating brush machines. If you have an opinion about which method is the best, in terms of least damage to the carpet/floor underneath, I'd appreciate hearing about it.

I don`t like the rotating brush machines. They just rotate the dirt and messes the nap up. I prefer steam cleaning.

I don't know if there is truly a way to avoid it but, regardless of the mechanical method- detergents are your enemy!
Residual detergents just make carpets dirty faster. There is a company here in ATL- "Zero-Rez" that supposedly don't use "detergents", which means the carpet stays cleaner longer.
It's probably a franchise- may be in your area.

You can do some searches in the forum on the subject. Bottom line - a GOOD technician with a steam cleaner, who uses a strong vacuum with a beater bar BEFORE extracting, will be able to get the carpet cleaner than any other method short of removal and washing in an oriental rug washer. Period. You don't want to hire the low bidder, and you want substantial references that you verify - preferably in person so you can see an average job or two. Be aware that a really dirty carpet can take two or three cleanings before the bulk of the ground-in dirt is removed. It can be done faster, but at the risk of shrinkage and split seams and saturated pads.

I don't think carpet cleaning is really worth it. Some of the dirt is still left behind. I would really rather just rip it up and buy new.

Best carpet cleaner I ever employed always vacuumed my house prior to using a truck-mounted steam cleaner. Never left the carpets wet, just a little damp. When my toddler daughter spilled a quart of latex paint, and we had to replace carpet in a bedroom, he asked if he could have a sample to take back to his shop to try out a new solvent. I happily obliged. Loved that guy!

I would prefer steam cleaning rather than any other methods.
