GOOD MORNING, HOUSTON!!! I need recommendations for moving companies in the Clear Lake area. All the ones I've gotten quotes from are by the hour, and well - that makes me leery :} They promise 2 men & a truck....but what if the men they send are old & slow? I can see how the bill can add up! Any recommendations for moving companies out there?? Thank you!!

There are other threads on this topic, and I always answer the same: 3 Men Movers.

Some tips: They have a flat fee for x hours (3?), and so if they can get done in that time, you know exactly how much you will pay. Otherwise, any mover worth your time should be able to give you an estimate as to how long it should take. Also, the more you do up front, the better. Have all of the boxes ready to go, any furniture tha needs to come apart should be in pieces, and pets should be out of the way. Finally, the movers typically have morning and afternoon appointments. They are fresh (and strong) in the morning, so that is the appointment you want! Otherwise, you risk getting slow, tired guys who drop your stuff.

Oh yeah, have some water for them, and don't be shy: tell the head guy up front that you will tip $xx if the job is done within the quoted time. Yes, you will pay more, but you were going to tip anyways (weren't you?) and now they know it.

During college (10 years ago) I worked summers for one of the big/reputable moving companies... local moves were always charged by the man-hour, so don't be scared off by that. Ask for binding quotes from the companies... that will be the ceiling that they can't exceed.

We used Bay Area Movers twice when we lived there and also had some friends use them. I recommend them. We did not have any problems.

Also, I agree with the above suggestion of having cold water for the movers. They seem to appreciate it and have cash to tip them with.

Nighthawk (or is it Nitehawk)? They are great - have moved me like 5 times.
