Why isn't Houston as upscale as its peers? (Dallas, The Woodlands: credit card, shopping center)

I've always thought that question. Places like Atlanta, Dallas, and Miami have a lot of upscale options compared to Houston's one. Because of that, it seems like Houston lacks some upscale stores (in my opinion, don't bash me): Bloomingdale's, H&M, etc.; it only has one Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus compared to the others. People bash Houston for not being as upscale as the above cities. I think Houston has the economy, growth, and people to support more than one upscale mall. To add another point, Atlanta is booming with upscale malls (the future North Atlanta Center, the Streets of Buckhead, Midtown Mile along with Lenox Square, Phipps, and Perimeter). Is Houston going to have any luck? Are there any works for Houston to more upscale venues and malls?

Let other cities fill themselves with traps for the thirty thousandaires to enrich the credit card banks. I'll take Super Wal-Mart thank you very much.

You know you are right. It does seem that Houston is lacking. I do believe though The Galleria is not the only upscale shopping around these here parts. I have not been but I hear Memorial is suppose to be nice as well as Town & Country. The Woodlands is not to shabby either. I am sure there are more but that is all that pops in my head right now.

Highland Village and River Oaks Shopping center seem fairly upscale (at least to me). You have lots of upscale stores spread around the Galleria area as well.
