Hi. I am making a short trip to Houston to see if I might like living there. Am interested in seeing artsy, eclectic neighborhoods and maybe some nice walking/shopping neighborhoods. I am already planning on checking out the Theater District and The Heights. Any other parts of town I should see? I am 40 and not really interested in college areas or the under-30 partying spots.

I don't need tourist attractions...it's more the neighborhoods and cool areas of Houston I'm interested in.

Thanks!

Take a nice drive through the Heights down Heights Blvd and into the side streets. You can go south from there and visit Memorial Park on the other side of I-10. You could also drive down Washington to see a lot of the townhomes that are popping up.

Drive through River Oaks for fun and then get Westheimer east into downtown and visit the Montrose area and downtown. You can walk along Buffalo Bayou near downtown.

I'd also suggest visiting the West University area and maybe even the Medical Center. They have some great homes in West U.

Buffalo Bayou is a large Bayou that flows through downtown and into the Port of Houston. The water isn't the best, but it's interesting to check out.

I also second Rice Village, it's off Kirby and University Blvd near West U. You'll find a lot of history and interesting neighborhoods inside the 610 loop.

Native tip: Bring lots of mosquito repellent!! Mosquitoes are extremely bad right now.

Great, thanks. Sounds lovely. Are there hike and bike trails along the Bayou, or within the 610 Loop?
Just wondering if Houston is dog-friendly in that way.

^^Yes, and I think there is a dog park near Waugh and Allen Pkwy...maybe its just a fountain where people take the dogs.

I think Montrose and the Heights area are your best bets. If you move here, what will your housing budget be and will you rent or buy? House or apartment? This might help us recommend places to check out.

Wow, there's already so many great suggestions on this thread.

I am applying to Houston school districts as a teacher, so I have no idea what part of town I might end up in. If I do get hired in Houston, I would rent an apartment. I have lived in Austin for a year without much luck finding a full time position, and there seem to be a lot more jobs in Houston. Plus, some friends suggested that I might really like Houston for its arts, culture, and people over 30
