I refuse to eat at chains. Fortunately, as many chains as there are here, there are just as many not chains.
Are there really that many more chains based in DFW than Houston though? I don't think so.

This is one place where my Houston brethren and I split the sheets.

Shipley's is -marginally adequate- at best, and not even in the same league as Krispy Kreme. I don't understand all the Houston love for Shipley's, except I guess if you grow up eating crap you learn to love it.

El Fenix is great. They are a chain, but a LOCAL chain in the DFW area. They had one restaurant in Houston for decades. It was a "Mall store" in the Galleria Food Court, and yes, all those "Mall Stores" are terrible. El Fenix has gotten rid of them and now only has the regular restaurants, which are great.

El Chico has improved over the years, but not enough for me to go there (Mother loved it, so we always took her there; the only reason I know what they're like in recent years).

I usually prefer small, individual, mom-and-pop joints. I love El Fenix, but it can't compare with Irma's. With many of the small Mexican joints in Houston? Yeah, better. With some of the sublime ones? No way.

Shipley's--well, if I went the rest of my life without a Shipley's doughnut, it would not bother me a bit. I don't get all the hoopla.

Houston really needs to a Krispy Kreme. It will grow on y'all who are Shipley's fans.

I believe so. Chillis, Macaroni Grill, On the Border, Corner Bakery, Maggianos, Rockfish, El Chico, Taco Bueno, La Madaline, Dave and Busters, Dickey's BBQ, Golden Chick, Panchos, Pizza Inn, Pizza Patron, Texas de Brazil, Tony Romas, El Fenix, Cantina Laredo, and TGI Fridays are all based in Dallas or just outside of it. Im sure Im missing a few.

Either way, most of them I would never eat at. Though Chillis is my guilty pleasure.

The thing I love about K.K. is that if you get the doughnuts while they are warm, the fat calories have not really had time to "set" and so they really don't count. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it.

The thing I like about NOT having K.K. in Houston is that I am able to save K.K. for an "occasional" treat when I am out and about!

Shipley's - I can drive past them with no problem. Now if they had a "hot" light I might give them a try - but who wants a greasy cold doughnut...bleh...that's why I don't buy K.K.'s in a grocery store.

Dallas is home to several large restaurant enterprises. They do a lot of their test marketing and tweaking in and around Dallas and the area around I 35 from Georgetown south. If they have a success, it will expand.

I'll admit when Krispy Kreme came to Waco; it was busy pretty much everyday. I don't know why it was closed down. I prefer Shipley's myself though.

Btw, justme02....you know they have a ninfa's in Downtown Waco. I never ate there, but people say it's good. (Than again...it's Wacoans we're talking about )

I am wondering if it is tied to the I-love-Whatburger gene?
